In shortWerewolf romance in vertical format runs on a fixed cast web (the rejecting Alpha, the fated Alpha King, the underestimated Luna-to-be, the scheming false mate) and one of four plot formulas. Each formula is the same shape: rejection, exile, a stronger mate who recognises her, the ex's regret, and a public reversal where the false mate is exposed. The ex is never redeemed.

Werewolf romance gives a writer three things vertical drama needs and most settings lack: an institutional rule (mates, bonds, ranks) that can be violated publicly in the first minute; a physical tell (scent, eyes, the shift) that lets a cliffhanger land in a single frame; and a built-in escalation ladder (Omega to Luna, pack to kingdom). The audience knows the rules in advance, so no episode is spent explaining them.
The frame is usually revenge on the ex, layered with sweet healing with the new mate. The revenge line owns every act ending; the healing line pays off last.
Four roles, fixed. Names and details are yours; the functions are not.
The rejecting Alpha (the ex). Head of pack A, controlling, deceived by appearances. He rejects or neglects the heroine, publicly, early. Two rules for writing him: his cruelty must be real and staged, not implied, so the audience earns its later satisfaction; and he is not redeemed. He can realise, regret, beg. He ends the series without his title and without her, watching her new life. Viewers punish any other ending.
The fated Alpha King (the new mate). Leader of a rival or greater pack, the strongest creature in the story by a wide margin. Cold, possessive, feared by everyone, and indulgent toward her alone. His strength has to visibly exceed the ex's; a new mate who is merely "also strong" undercuts the reversal. Physical presence matters in this genre: the wolf form, the size, the room falling silent.
The Luna-to-be (the heroine). Starts low: an Omega, a substitute, a bride nobody chose. Gentle, enduring, easily broken in appearance. Her arc is an awakening: a bloodline (moon-blessed, silver wolf, royal line) surfaces once the true mate recognises her, and she grows from love-struck to clear-eyed and decisive. The change should be gradual across acts, not a single episode.
The false mate (the tool). Low-ranked, disguises her scent or manufactures a bond to take the heroine's place. Creates the early misunderstandings and the early cruelty. In the last act she is exposed and out-ranked by the awakened heroine, in public. She is the first score settled and the easiest.
Each has the same skeleton: opening set-up, mid-season turn, high point, final exposure.
Formulas 1 and 3 are revenge-led. Formula 4 is healing-led with a revenge finale. Formula 2 adds a third character who can carry cliffhangers when the leads cannot be in the same room.
The Alpha's Dead Bride is formula 3 with a changed face standing in for the awakened bloodline: rejected at the altar, presumed dead, she returns as a medical investor the pack cannot place; the ex recognises the scent before the face; the false fiancée is exposed through the drug she has been taking; the ex kneels in public and is not taken back.
